getting into cross

I guess this post can go either in the equipment section or here but anyway.
I am looking to build a cyclocross bike that I can also ride as a rain bike. Since the ban of disc brake is lifted on the cyclocross circuit, does it make any sense to say get a baron outsider, train on the road and race cyclocross; to kill two birds with one stone so to speak? This up coming winter is going to be my first wet winter and I am not sure what to expect.

Cons vs Pros?

cyclocross bike geometry

One more beginner's question... Should a cyclocross bike ride like my race bike geometry wise? I ride a 56 road frame, do I need to size up/down to accommodate remount/dismount/or any other cross maneuver?
thanks!

This morning at 10:45am Di2's frame finally gave out. Poor thing could simply take no more and the drive side chain stay failed under Dave's maximum power (around 147 watts) output. I think we all agree that no frame gave so much of itself for so little in return. In an effort to avoid any future tragedies I'm proposing this be Dave's race bike next year:

Link

Questions about Details

Setting up for the "gritty season," I'd like input from knowledgeable teammates about little stuff:

Does it matter what solvent you use on your chain?
What do you think about the "don't wash it just lube it right" school of chain thought?
What wet lube, dry lube is good?
Do you really have to lubricate anything other than your chain?
How much of a tool (yes I'm serious) do you bring on the rides? Little multi-tool? What does it have to have?
Which of the cartridge systems do you prefer for flats?

These are things I think lots of you know so well you take it for granted, but I still would like advice.
I'm REALLY hoping for replies from Cat 3 and up
Thanks

IMPORTANT INFO - schedule for 9-4,5

Hi Team,

I’ll keep my usually “silliness” to a minimum when we have important things going on so PLEASE READ THESE NOTES:

First – 2011 Team bikes are being ordered RIGHT NOW. The deadline (and believe me this is a FIRM ONE) is September 17th. (not 18th or 19th but the 17th). You MUST have an order form from your team Captain (Devo Team Scot Weeks is your man for this). So PLEASE, if you want one, contact your team captain. If you are looking at picking up a 2010 one, look on the team board – there are a LOT of them.

Something NEW (at least for the men’s team) we’ll be collecting Team dues / WSBA money separately this year. Ya, an extra check but it help spread the money love!

As promised we have more 2011 Team Information.

Women’s Team:
Gina will continue as the overall Women’s Team Director (and Captain the 1-2 program). We’d like to thank Shannon Payne for helping out with the Cat 3 team and working closely with Gina over the past few years. Shannon will continue to race with us, but Anne Gerard will step into that roll this year. Michelle Gross will continue to work with the Devo Team (along with some selected others)

Men’s Team:
I have renewed my own contract…. And will continue to direct the Men’s team and Captain the 1-2 program - SHOCKING I KNOW. We have some new team Captains. I’d like to thank Scot Weeks for running the 2010 men’s devo program this year. He did a great job, upgrading TEN riders! That’s a new record. Nick Duckstein will heading up the 2011 Devo program. Nick has shown a lot enthusiasm this year and we feel very confident he will be a great leader for the 2011 Devo Team. Michael Klisch has decided to step down from running the Cat 3 program and will also be leaving the team to ride with NW Velo. We talked a lot about that but in the end, it’s good for both of us. Michael was a great teammate and Team Captain. I am REALLY happy to announce that Lane Wilkinson will take over Captaining the Men’s Cat 3 program. Lane will bring a new spirit and a long history of race experience to this program.

Upcoming Team EVENTS:

# Our Meet The Team Ride is set for Saturday September 18th it’s not a required attendance, but if you can make it, it would be much appreciated.

RECRUITING:
If you have friends, family, acquaintances, enemies (that you would like to keep closer) that think they MIGHT be interested in Racing next year, they are always welcome on Team Rides. They don’t have to wait for the official “meet the team ride”. Just clue them in what’s going on. Ie, if they have NEVER ridden in a group, let the ride leader know that. Also, let them know, that we really, REALLY, won’t be impressed if they attempt to show us “how strong they are”. We will have plans at the rides, and follow them. Conversely, we won’t try to impress them either by riding them into the ground.

# Our OFFICIAL – pre-season meeting (and TRAINING SEMINAR) is set to go Wednesday October 20th at REI in Seattle. If you have a training plan, a coach, or you KNOW what you’re doing - YOU SHOULD STILL COME TO THIS. Nothing said should conflict with anything known to be “good science”. Ya, there are plenty of ways to skin a cat, but if someone convinces you that a hammer is the right tool – you might want to think twice about that skinning technique. Just because it causes lots of noise and creates a BIG spectacular mess, doesn’t mean it’s good. It’s just loud and colorful. Simple, elegant, well thought-out plans aren’t super sexy, but they work. Balancing on one leg, atop a bonzu ball, while holding a dumbbell, AND singing “California Gurls” might SEEM innovative or edgy, but it’s just fuc#ing stupid.

UPCOMING ORDERS:

# TEAM BIKES – Get Forms from Team Captain – fill out, print out, bring the Bothell ski and Bike BY September 17th at the LATEST.

PAST ORDER STATUS:

WEEKEND RACING:

NONE, All Done.

TEAM RIDES: - NO Official Team Rides Until October 2nd (meaning nothing is planned – if you show up those attending will set the agenda)

Saturday Sept 4th Team Ride.
Meeting 9:00am at the Silver Cloud Hotel
Route: Those attending will set the agenda.

Sunday Sept 5th Team Ride.
Meeting 9:00am at the Silver Cloud Hotel
Route: Those attending will set the agenda.

Weekend R/T for 8-28,29

Hi Team,

I came across this quote and really got me thinking….

"I know that (Saxo Bank’s Fabian) Cancellara is almost unbeatable ... But if I’m having a good day, and he a less-good, why not dream of a world title?"

- Tony Martin on his hopes for a world championship time trial win, after winning the Eneco Tour.

While no one is more of believer in reality (at least as I see it) I also like to “dream”. And like Tony I’m not stupid enough to know that a sh*t ton of hard work is the ONLY way to achieve most dreams, still, I think you gotta have them.

Most people start this sport with little more then – crap, bike racing… how fricken hard can that be? (ok maybe not but most think – “hey, I think I’ll give that a go”). Which is perfectly fine… AS A STARTING POINT. Once you get “the bug”, “the fever”, “the infection”, “the disease” or what ever cleaver metaphor you want to use, you should start to DREAM. Building a strong team is a lot harder then one might imagine. Especially since none of gets paid to do this. We all need to get something out of it. I personally think a sense of accomplishment should be at the top of that list – but it’s really up to you – what do YOU want out of this?

So what is an accomplishment and how long do you “savor” it before re-setting it? Every time I set a goal, I kind of thought (once I get that I’LL BE HAPPY and CONTENT). To be honest, I was happy and content – but not for that long. I won’t bore you with my progression through the ranks except to say, once I got my Cat 1 upgrade I did VERY seriously think about quitting. I talked to several people about taking over the team and was really looking for a way out. I didn’t want the team to go away (I knew I could quit easily enough). I simply thought, I’ve done something I NEVER, and mean NEVER, thought I could do in cycling. I’m probably the most un-aerobically gifted cyclist on this planet. I never thought I’d be a 2 let alone take the next step. So I had accomplished MORE then I ever thought I could. I thought I did it ALL, then something happened… I set a NEW goal. And I never looked back. I know if I get my current goal (dream) I’ll be happy and content for short while, and then I’ll RESET it again. The beauty is there is NO END.

Again, the point of this is NOT about me, it’s about how we all LIMIT ourselves. We should feel proud when we achieve our goals. We should celebrate. We should pat ourselves on the back… THEN get back to work! Re-set, Re-load, and FIRE!

As Laurent Fignon wrote in his book, “A true cyclist sometimes has to bite the dust before he can reach the stars. Win. Survive. Hang in there. It’s a race against oblivion, a race against time, a race against yourself: a career, a life. Can a man’s character be represented in the way he rides a bike?”

This team just had its BEST year ever. We had more upgrades and results then ever before. We need to keep the FIRE going. Did you just upgrade? GREAT, move up again! Have you been “thinking about moving up?” DO IT. We need to make things happen. Don’t keep thinking “I can’t be good at the next level”, or “I don’t want to train/commit more”, or any other “standard” excuses. You CAN DO IT. Ask us (guys and gals on the Elite teams) ask ME, it’s not rocket science, just quit limiting yourself. Don’t listen to all the folklore like cat 1-2’s need to train 25 hours a week – THAT’S CRAP. Ya, it will take some time, dedication, and hard work – but what else do you have to do? Ok, maybe there are a few things you COULD do, but you know what I mean. The ONLY way I would say that you don’t have enough time is if you spend NO TIME AT ALL IN FRONT OF A TV OR COMPUTER AT HOME. And I only know ONE person who doesn’t have a TV at home – and he rides a TON. You have TIME – DO IT!!!!

There will a lot of new things going on in 2011. We’ll be letting you all know soon. New leaders for some teams, New Attitudes for some others, New team colors… (just kidding….), New team kit designs (not kidding)….and MOST IMPORTANT – let’s have some NEW DREAMS for 2011.

A couple things to get on your “official” calendars now.

Our OFFICIAL MEET THE TEAM RIDE is set for September 18th (Saturday) and a HUGE thank you goes to Gina for being on top of this and getting us a great spot!

Our OFFICIAL – pre-season meeting (and TRAINING SEMINAR) is set to go Wednesday October 20th at REI in Seattle

UPCOMING ORDERS:

2011 TEAM BIKES Very soon.

PAST ORDER STATUS:

WEEKEND RACING:

Saturday LWV #3 Carnation
http://wsbaracing.com/schedule

Sunday Seward Park Criterium
http://wsbaracing.com/schedule

TEAM RIDES:

Saturday Aug 28th TEAM RIDE –
Meeting 9:00 am at the Silver Cloud Hotel (9:25 Leschi Meeting point).
Those attending with set the agenda.
Time: 2:30, 3:00 hours.

Sunday Aug 29th TEAM RIDE –
Meeting 9:00 am at the Silver Cloud Hotel (9:25 Leschi Meeting point).
Those attending with set the agenda.
Time: 2:30, 3:00 hours.

high end tt cockpits (easton attack, vision trimax carbon)

We have the following items for sale.

Easton Attack One-piece aerobar, size small, 38cm wide. I would say that it will be a good fit for a smaller rider or someone with shorter forearms. This is a full cockpit with basebar and extensions molded as one piece of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber arm rests can be mounted flat against the wing, or elevated with the provided shims. If you install the arm rests flat on the wing, the drop on this bar is one of the lowest available. Since there are fewer fasteners, it is the lightest tt cockpit you can buy (~350g). Note that the new design from Easton is more adjustable, but significantly heavier. This model will shave almost a pound off of an average tt bike and it is super aero. The bar is very stiff with no flex. Works with 26.0 stems. I have a set of thick arm pads and a set of thin pads. The pads are after-market and are secured with velcro so that they can be changed easily. If you want the OEM pads, they are available online for $20. Condition of the carbon excellent. Price is $300 (half of retail).

Shimano Dura Ace 7800 10 speed bar end tt shifters. Unlike 7900, these are fully compatible with all previous Shimano 10 speed groupos. $50

SRAM TT900 Full Carbon aero brake levers. Stupid light. Use these with the Easton bars for a very light cockpit. <100g. $60

Vision Trimax full carbon base bar + r bend extensions. The extensions are cut to be relatively small (a smidge longer than the Eastons). These will work with a 26.0 dia stem clamp. Includes cable housing already installed to save you some time. $250 (less than half of new)

Vision aero reverse tt levers. These are also some of the lightest brake levers available and are super aero. Note that these clamp over the outside of the basebar and are not a universal fit. They work with Vision products and you would need to verify fit if you have a different brand. $40

Team helmet

I'm due for a new helmet. It's not because I wrote one off, but because mine is old. I'm wondering if any of the local bike shops typically carry the team helmet (in proper colors) so that I can verify the size before I pick one up. Also, is this the sort of thing that would have a team discount at the beginning of the season (i.e., should I wait)?
